A group of students from Marymede Catholic College under the guidance of their teacher and poet John Milides, paid tribute to the victims of the Black Saturday fires with the publication of Poetic Voices from Black Saturday.

The anthology of poems were the results of extra curricular classes on the art and craft of poetry which John Milides established a few years ago.

Mr Milides teaches humanities and mathematics at Marymede. The school community and the wider community of the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne, where the school is situated, was affected by the deadly fires which claimed over 100 victims and wiped out whole villages in February 2009.

Speaking to SBS Greek, Mr Milides said about his students "As their teacher, and their first reader, I am most impressed by the poetry produced by these fine young poets. Their writing is full of pathos, emotion, pain and compassion".
