Melbourne's Greek-Australian Cultural League announced 2019 program

Recently, the Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne announced its cultural events and activities for 2019. League's president Cathy Alexopoulos talks to SBS Greek.


Antipodean Palette 

Preparations have begun again for this year’s Antipodean Palette Art Exhibition, celebrating the diverse work of Greek Australian artists. Since 2011, the Antipodean Palette has established itself as a major annual art event in the Greek community and invites artists nationwide to exhibit work in a variety of form and medium.

The exhibition offers both emerging and established artists an ideal platform to network and introduce their work to the wider community. It also stimulates public interest in the Visual Arts by highlighting the wonderful talent existing in our community. 

The Antipodean Palette will be held at Steps Gallery (62 Lygon St. Carlton) from May 23 until June 2, 2019. The official opening will be on Thursday 23 May 2019 at 6:30pm. Professional and emerging artists interested in taking part can submit their entries online gaclexhibitions@gmail.com by Friday 12 April 2019.

Christos Fifi's book launch 

The Greek-Australian Cultural Association of Melbourne, the Greek Writers Association of Australia and the Vice-President of the Alliance for Pensioners' Rights, Giorgos Zagalis are presenting Christos N. Fifis's new book. 

It is titled "The First Hellenic Community of Australia: History of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, 1897-2018". Guest speakers at the book launch will be Dr Kostas Vitzos and Dr Giorgos Vasilakopoulos and the event will be coordinated by the writer and poet, Konstantinos Kalymnios. 

The book launch will take place on Sunday 7 April 2019, at 3.30 pm, at the hall of the Pontian Community of Melbourne and Victoria.

Literary Competition 

Also, GACL's Literary Competition includes works written in the Greek or English language, by writers residing in Australia and over 18 years of age, in the following categories: Poetry and Short story. 

The candidates can submit their work (gaclitcomp@gmail.com) by Friday 12th July. The winning entries in each category in each language will be published in Issue No. 65, 2019 of the annual bilingual periodical of the GACL, Antipodes.

The results of the Literary Competition will be announced at a special function incorporating the launch of the periodical Antipodes in October 2019.

Periodical Antipodes 

The 65th issue of the literary periodical Antipodes will be launched οn October, 2019. This year the periodical is celebrating its 46th year of continuous circulation.

The issue will pay tribute to the Greek-Australian artists of our community as well as a celebratory section on the 50 years since the establishment of the League in 1969/1970.

As usual, this issue will publish works submitted by our members or non-members such as poems, short stories, studies, essays, book reviews and οther literary works, in Greek and English and the Visual Arts.

Works to be submitted for publication must be original works that have not been published or promoted in another publication and 

The deadline for submitting contributions is Friday 12th July, 2019 at this email address: gacl.editor@gmail.com
