The new station at the observatory in Canberra's west could put Australia ahead of other countries and organisations in the sector of space communications, even ahead of NASA.

The quantum station will be using lasers in order to send data to space, rather than using radio waves which is the standard method.

The final site for the station has yet to be selected but Australia's National University (ANU) is set to begin construction soon. The station is funded by the ANU, CSIRO and the ACT's government.
