The photo exhibition "Behind the ruins" was recently launched at the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne.

The exhibition "Against the Ruins" that was recently launched by Premier Daniel Andrews, is the third collaboration with the Benaki Museum and includes some of Nelly’s most iconic works.

Elli Sougioultzoglou-Seraidari, known as Nelly’s, was a much sought-after photographer who was very active in Greece during the inter-war period of the 20s and 30s. Born in Asia Minor she arrived in Athens in 1924 from which time she set about visiting archaeological sites in an effort to become more acquainted with her ancestral roots.

It was on these same ruins which she would later take some of her most iconic photographs, many of which are currently on display at the Hellenic Museum.

This exhibition forms a part of a larger cultural exchange between the two museums and is expected to last until February 3, 2019.

Benaki Museum curator Aliki Tsirgialou talked to SBS Greek about the exhibition.
