A non profit organisation is attempting to save Australia's retiring icebreaker ship from an uncertain future before it's being replaced.

Aurora Australis has been travelling the icy waters in Antarctica for 30 years. The ship left for its final trip in the south in March and will be replaced by another icebreaker that is currently being built in Romania.

The sight of the orange icebreaker was common in Hobart, and now a group of former antartic expeditioners and people who value the ship's history have formed a non-profit organisation, with the aim of purchasing the icebreaker before its being sold by its owner company. The organisation known as ''Aurora Australis Foundation'' aims to preserve the ship's history by turning it into a museum.
