The government majority in the Greek Parliament is expected to propose an investigation for former Justice Minister Dimitris Papangelopoulos regarding the way he handled the alleged bribery scandal involving prominent politicians and the Novartis pharmaceutical company.
The committee, according to Greek media reports, will investigate accusations that officials of the previous government, including Papangelopoulos, intervened in the judicial inquiry into the alleged bribery scandal in order to incriminate their political rivals.
However, sources close to ruling party, New Democracy, said that the Government will not pursue forme PM, Alexis Tsipras. Current Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has been quoted as saying to his close colleagues that the fate of the prime ministers is judged by the people in elections and by history.
“Mr. Tsipras undoubtedly has political responsibilities, but these have been judged at the polls,” according to the same sources.
The case file was sent by the High Court’s prosecutor’s office to Parliament on Monday and will be opened today (Wednesday).
SYRIZA, the main opposition party, has slammed the governments stance, saying that Mr Mitsotakis ‘is double coward”.
From one point he cannot deal with his political opponent (Tsipras) and the other he cannot deal with his “internal nightmare”. The latter, is taken as a reference to former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who is said to be a fervent supports of inquiry for Mr Tsipras.
