At least 20 buildings have been damaged or destroyed in a bushfire on Sydney's outskirts that was started by a backburning operation.
RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons has confirmed to the ABC that the fire in the Blue Mountains that destroyed at least 20 properties was started by a backburning operation.
Mr Fitzsimmons told the ABC the RFS crews in the area had been attempting to protect communities around the Bells Line of Road, but "unfortunately things don't always go to plan".
