As of 4pm Monday, 1.89 million Australians had downloaded COVIDSafe: An app that helps track people who might have come in contact with someone infected with the virus.
"We had hoped that perhaps we would get to the million mark within five days and we were lucky to get there within five hours," Health Minister Greg Hunt said.
The voluntary app was launched on Sunday night.
