Assistant coach of the Greek men's and women's national team, Jim Minadakis shared his story with SBS Greek.

He grew up in Sydney’s Dulwich Hill, but in 1995, whilst on a visit to Greece, he was drafted to complete his compulsory military service. He lives permanently in Greece, since then, although, he hasn’t forgotten his other adopted country Australia, where loved to play Rugby League.

Seven years ago, he heard of the Greek Rugby League Association and he rushed to become an active part of the nascent effort.

Ever since, the sport has expanded counting 6 teams throughout Greece, as well as a national men’s team, which is “flirting” with its first possible participation in a World Cup. So far, it has beaten Malta, Ukraine and Norway and is playing Scotland and Russia on November 3 and 7 respectively. A Greek win with either team could secure the tocket to England’s 2021 World Cup.

A year ago, a women’s national team was created, which is playing against Turkey, in a few days its first official international game.
