Stella Axarlis, former opera singer, is an Australia Day Ambassador for the City of Casey. She says that Australia should have a referendum to determine when to celebrate Australia Day.

"If you are going to have a referendum for any other issue why not for this one" says Stella Axarlis talking about the current controversy around the 26th of January being Australia Day or "Invasion Day".

She's been an Australia Day Ambassador a number of times the last 10 years, a role she enjoys, as she told SBS Greek.

Ms Axarlis acknowledges that the date we've been celebrating Australia Day is a divisive one. She says Australia should engage in a dialogue with all sections of society on the matter of national identity and its representation and celebration.

"I totally  understand our indigenous brothers and sisters who do not feel that that day is relevant to them and as they are such an important part of our nation, I think we should be having a discourse" she says.

But Stella Axarlis, known for wearing for being proud of her heritage and for wearing her heart on her sleeve, goes a step further and says Australia should have a referendum to settle one and for all the question of the date for Australia Day:

"I would like to see what the people think in general' she says.
