The seat has been vacated after the resignation as an MP by former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull. The by-election is expected some time in October.
Announcing her candidature Ms Vithoulkas said she was “ disgusted by the state of federal politics and the circus that people are having to witness while they are just trying to get on with their lives, earn a living, run their businesses and look after their families”.
“They need stability, continuity and fearlessness. A strong Independent whose only loyalty is to the people she serves, not stacked branches”, said Ms Vythoulkas.
"I am a fighter, not a career politician"
She describes herself as a fighter and a business owner who wants to serve the community, not a bureaucrat or career politician who has never had a proper job.
“Like the people I would represent I am used to working hard and focusing on delivering results. I know what it’s like to have to put everything on the line to build a business, pay people and work hard for my family.”
“I want to rebuild the faith people should have in their community leaders, and make them the priority, not a pawn in party politics”, said Ms Vythoulkas.
The Sydney City Coincillor has been the voice of small businesses impacted by light rail construction in Sydney’s CBD and the organiser of the Class Action to take on State Government in the Supreme Court. She recently has begun to also organise another class action for the light rail in Newcastle’s CBD after feeling the impact firsthand, which forced her to close her VIVO cafe on George Street last week.
