The Evzones shine in Sydney

Events took place in in Sydney today to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. Governor of NSW, David Hurley, attended the ceremony in Martin Places cenotaph. Greece was represented by Lieutenant General Konstantinos Gkatzogiannis who thanked the Australian people for its help to Greece, during second world war. In a moving ceremony, the Hellenic Republic honored two Australian veterans. Thomas Lea, 97 years old, who served in Greece with the 7th Division Ammunition Subpark. He fought on Greece's mainland and later in Crete. He returned to Australia in 1942. He spoke fondly of the Greek people's hospitality. The Hellenic Republic also honored the deceased Charles Norman Badans who had fought in Greece with the 23rd Battalion. He was a prisoner of war in Crete and returned to Australia after the end of the war. He was represented by widow at the ceremony. The award was given to his grandson, Jacob Ralph, who is captain in the RAAF. More in this report by Themi Kallos
