The Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria has condemned Senator Fraser Anning's maiden speech in which he praised the White Australia policy and in particular, attacked muslim immigration. The president of the Greek Community Bill Papastergiadis told SBS Greek there is no place in Australian politics for the comments and has called on them to be withdrawn by Mr Anning.

President of the Greek Community of Melbourne Bill Papastergiadis said that people like senator Anning threaten Australia's multiculturalism. "Let's call things by their name" he said "this is racism" and stressed that Australia is an example of a successful multicultural country, a society where people from different backgrounds live in harmony.
"To have people like this Senator confronting obvious facts by perpetrating racist and mythical views about our country and our society is inappropriate, it needs to be roundly condemned and he needs to apologise for his actions because words do have affect on people's lives."
The Greek Community of Melbourne used strong language in its press release demanding senator Anning to retract his comments and apologise to those he offended.

The press release

The Greek Community of Melbourne demands Senator Fraser Anning to retract his statement and apologise to all those who he offended

There is no place in Australian politics for statements such as those made in senator Fraser Anning’s maiden speech which in plain English seeks a return to the White Australia policy.

Comments regarding Muslim Australians are highly offensive and racist and must be withdrawn. Also, Senator Anning’s calling for a ‘final solution’ on immigration was appalling and an insult to the Jewish community. The Senator’s anti-Semitic and Islamophobic views are unacceptable, racist and bigoted.

Australia has benefited immensely from the contribution of migrants over the past century and we are all proud of our multicultural way of life.

The Greek Community of Melbourne demands that Senator Fraser Anning retracts his statement and apologise immediately to all those who he offended.
