The small community of Keratea and in general the Municipality of Lavreotiki on the outskirts of Athens, in the middle of Attica prefecture, has very strong relations with Southern Serbia and in particular with the town of Aleksinac.

Ms Kiriaki Choleva is the presiding member of Keratea Local Council which belongs to the Municipality of Lavreotiki. On a visit to Australia, she attended the annual 24th Greek-Serbian Orthodox and Cultural Friendship Day in Sydney on Sunday 24 September at the Serbian Orthodox Church and Parish of “St Stefan” Plumpton/Rooty Hill and she was delighted to see such an event in the Antipodes from the two communities in the Diaspora as her Municipality in which her Local Council belongs to has a Sister-City relationship with Aleksinac. During the tragic wars in the former Yugoslavia and the bombing of Serbia, many Greek citizens from Macedonia in the north to Crete in the south had sent humanitarian aid to the Serbian nation, as did the citizens of the Municipality of Lavreotiki. Ms Choleva speaks to Dimitrios Kametopoulos about that event as well as the strong ties between Greeks and Serbs.
