In January, the annual Hellenic Museum Summer School will hold a series of short courses, aiming to educate the participants about ancient Greece. Dr. Christopher Gribbin, coordinator of the Summer School talked to SBS Greek about this year’s courses.

The courses offer an insightful look upon the history, society, and architecture of the ancient Greeks.

The classes are divided into seminars and are delivered in a way that combines fun with learning.

According to Dr. Gribbin, anyone can participate.

"Those curious about ancient Greece get to meet its culture for the first time, while those who have studied the subject will have the opportunity to refresh their knowledge and perhaps learn something new," said Dr. Gribbin.

This year’s subjects

This summer, the Hellenic Museum Summer School offers four courses:

  • The Minoans and Mycenaeans. An in depth look into two cultures whose wealth and achievements survive to this day.
  • Cities of the Greek and Roman World. A series of seminars exploring the architecture of some of the most famous cities of the ancient world, such as Athens, Pompeii and Constantinople.
  • Ancient Greek Religion. What was the Parthenon’s purpose? How did religion impact ancient Greece?
  • How to Argue Like Socrates. A more practical course that examines Socrates’s techniques on how to argue more effectively.
The summer school will take place at the Hellenic Museum, in Melbourne, from 7 to 11 January 2019.
