An Australian man feared to be detained in North Korea is in a very serious situation and the case is being treated with urgency, the federal attorney-general says.
The family of a 29-year-old Australian studying in North Korea who has reportedly been arrested in Pyongyang has said his detention has not been confirmed.
In a statement, the Perth family of Alek Sigley attempted to clarify the situation, while appealing for privacy.
"The situation is that he has not been in digital content with friends and family since Tuesday morning Australia time, which is unusual for him," a family spokesman said.
"Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is therefore seeking to confirm his whereabouts and welfare."
