The United States President Donald Trump says he ordered the bombardment of a Syrian airfield following a suspected chemical weapons attack the U-S has blamed on the government of President Bashar al-Assad. In a video statement Mr Trump said he ordered a "targeted military strike" against the airbase from which the attack was believed to have been launched. The federal government has confirmed Australian defence force personnel were not directly involved in the American air strikes in Syria. The Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says Australia supports what he called a "swift and just response" that sends a message to the Syrian government. Mr Turnbull says the use of chemical weapons amounts to a war crime that cannot be permitted with impunity, and that the perpetrators of the alleged gas attack in Idlib province must be brought to account. But Mr Turnbull says the U-S attack was not an act of war. Dina Gerolymou and Themis Kallos discuss the story.
