Antonia Krikelis says people in the town of Bairnsdale in Gippsland's east are in shock by the severity of the bushfires that sent thousands to the beaches for protection.

Antonia Krikelis and her husband Philip were left with no choice but to spent New Year's eve in their shop in Bairnsdale. Authorities had closed the roads as bushfires rage in the area between Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale.

"We are not  afraid but we are in shock. We are in shock by what's happening. People here are so nice but you can tell they are worried and in shock. They look each other straight in the eyes" says Antonia Krikelis who lives in Lakes Entrance and works in Bairnsdale.

"There are many Greek her" says Ms Krikelis ' we phone each other to make sure everyone is ok every two hours or so".
