Women's World Cup kicks off tonight

In a few hours, the Women's World Cup will officially start. Host country France will face North Korea in the cup's first game. The Matildas will have to wait until Sunday for their turn, when the team is scheduled to take on Italy.

In a few hours, the Women's World Cup will officially start. Host country France will face North Korea in the cup's first game. The Matildas will have to wait until Sunday for their turn, when the team is scheduled to take on Italy.


Tonight, (tomorrow early morning hours for Australia), begins tthe Women's World Cup in France. The Matildas are speculated to have a good shot at reaching the final and bring the cup to Australia. 

The first match is between France and North Korea, Saturday 5am, Eastern Standard Time.  

The Matildas will have to wait until Sunday for their first match. The team will take on Italy, this Sunday, 9pm EST. You can watch the game live at SBS.

Barbarouses signs multi-year contract with Sydney FC

Earlier today, Sydney FC Confirmed that New Zealander football player, of Greek origins, Kosta Barbarouses will be joining the club. 

The International forward has signed on a “multi-year deal”, the announcement said.

The 29-year old has played in previous years with Melbourne Victory and before that with Wellington Phoenix, Brisbane Roar and with Greek giant, Panathinaikos.

He becomes Sydney F Head Coach Steve Corica’s first new signing since clinching the Hyundai A-League Championship last month.

Steve Corica said he was delighted to have captured the signature of one of the Hyundai A-League’s most sought after players.

“Kosta is an extremely good footballer and is highly regarded as one of the best strikers in Australia,” said Corica.

Barbarouses will join his new Sydney FC team mates when they return for training in July.

Barty seeking to claim a spot in the finals of Roland Garros

Australian tennis player, Ashleigh Barty is one step away from a place in the French Open final after dispatching Madison Keys 6-3 7-5.

In tonight’s semi she will play against American teenager Amanda Anisimova, who stunned defending champion, the Romanian Simona Halep, winning in two sets ( 6-2 6-4).

In the other women’s semi (also tonight at 7 p.m. AEST) Britain’s Johanna Konta will meet Market Vondrousova of the Czech Republic.

The  men’s semi-finals will start at about 11.00 p.m. (AEST). Rafael Nadal takes on Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will face Dominic Thiem.

National Premier leagues

In the NPL leagues, and in NSW, for the 14th round Sydney Olympic plays away this Sunday with Blacktown City. In Victoria and the 16th round Heidelberg plays tonight against Melbourne Knights.
