The Jewish community of Wentworth, Sydney, received a Federal Govt grant of $2.2m for security and infrastructure upgrades, ahead of the byelection in the seat, which the Liberal candidate and former Australian ambassador to Israel Dave Sharma said would be granted regardless of who wins the byelection. The Melbourne Habonim Dror Zionist organization in Melbourne, the Yeshiva-Beth Rivka Colleges and Beth Weitzman Centre and Lamm Library received pre-election grants from the State Govt to improve their premises and services to the Jewish community. The departing President of the Jewish Board of Deputies of NSW, Jeremy Spinak, received warm praise in the Parliament of NSW, for his outstanding contribution to the Jewish and general Australian community. The Israeli Ambassador in Australia, Mark Sofer, visited and praised the Melbourne Jewish Holocaust Centre and Museum in Elsternwick and met with survivor guides, management and two school groups who happened to be visiting the centre. Arthur Ashkin, a 96 year old American Jewish Physicist, became the oldest ever recipient of the Nobel prize, for his research and invention of laser optical pincers, which eventually led to precision microscopic medical surgery and industrial production.
