The Executive Council of Australian Jews president Anton Block joined other Jewish leaders around the world in condemning the racist and anti-Semitic events in Charlottesville and criticized the American President Donald Trump for his weak and vague response. The President of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria, Jennifer Huppert, condemned the racist and anti-Semitic placards which were pasted around two of Melbournes most prominent boys schools and described it as reprehensible and as an attack on Victorias famed multiculturalism. The former Australian ambassador to Israel, Dave Sharma spoke to the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies and stated that despite supporting a two state solution, he does not think that such a solution can be achieved in the current climate of Israeli-Palestinian relations in the region. Two motions presented before the South Australian Legislative Council, calling for an unconditional recognition of the Palestinians suffering and of a Palestinian State, without any preconditions, were defeated and successfully substituted by a more balanced motion in line with the current policies of the main Australian political parties.
