Malka Leifer, who is facing extradition from Israel to Australia, to stand trial on 74 charges of sexual abuse of students at the Melbourne Israel-Adass girls’ school, has lost her appeal against being assessed by a panel of psychiatrists, to determine whether she is mentally fit enough to be extradited. Australian politicians from both major political parties have committed themselves to table and back the so called “Bring Leifer Back” motion and they believe it will be accepted by the Australian Parliament early next year. The South Australian Senator Stirling Griff, who is Jewish and whose ancestors come from a Lithuanian village where all Jewish villagers were shot and buried in a mass grave in 1941, co-sponsored a successful motion condemning anti-Semitism and the increase of teaching about the Holocaust in Australian schools. Descendants of Holocaust survivors shopping in the Southland Shopping Centre in Melbourne recently, were distraught by and reported two open displays of Nazism there, one at a shop selling Hitler’s anti-Semitic and hate-filled manifesto Mein Kampf and the other a man walking about openly wearing a large swastika armband. The Israeli El-Al Airline will begin testing direct flights between Tel-Aviv and Melbourne and expects the 17 to 18 hour flights to begin operating in April 2020
