Submissions from the Jewish community dominated those submitted to the Senate’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee re Australia’s closer relations with Iran. Australian Labor party distanced itself from the anti-Semitic scandals plaguing the British Labour party, which until now have resulted in the suspension of 50 prominent members and an MP. Holocaust commemorations in Sydney and Melbourne were conducted with great feeling and dignity and included witness statements and a program including Yiddish songs and poems. This week the Jewish literary world will mark the 100th death anniversary of the great Sholem Aleichem, writer, humourist and creator of beloved characters like Tevye and others from Fiddler on the Roof, who continue to entertain and enlighten audiences around the world. Anns: Kadimah in Melbourne will commence the Sholem Aleichem 100th Yortzayt celebrations with a film and panel discussion in the Classic Cinema Mon 9th May, 7.15PM. The Annual Yom-Hazikaron Commemorations and Yom Haatzmaut Celebrations will take place on the 10th and 11th May respectively, with details to be found in the Jewish media and websites.
