Australian Jewish leaders commended the decision to change the name of the Melbourne Federal Electoral seat of Batman to Cooper, in honour of the Aboriginal leader and human rights campaigner William Cooper, who in a unique act of solidarity with the Jewish people tried to deliver a protest letter to the German Embassy, condemning the Krsystalnacht anti-Jewish Nazi pogrom of the 9th November 1938 in Germany and Austria. Australian Zionist leaders met the former leader of the Opposition in Israel and newly elected Chairman of the “Sochnut”- World Jewish Agency, Itzhak Herzog, in Jerusalem and greeted him again when he arrived for a visit to Australia, and where he will deliver a speech on the 4th July, 7.30PM at the Veit Weizmann Centre, in Melbourne. The President of the Jewish Community Council of South Australia, Norman Schueler has been appointed Chair of the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission for the next two years and he was warmly congratulated by the SA Premier Steven Marshall and his Government.
