A district court in Jerusalem held the 47th hearing into the mental health of Malka Leifer and her ability to be extradited to stand trial in Victoria, over 74 cases of sexual abuse and rape of female students at the ultra-orthodox Addass Israel Girls’ School in Melbourne, where she was principal, before running off to Israel when these accusations against her began emerging in 2008. The Jewish Community Council of Victoria rejected a motion for a formal apology to the Jewish LGBTIQ support group Aleph Melbourne, which they refused affiliation in 1999, but they have agreed to meet with the group to work on an apology motion that will be more acceptable to the JCCV’s majority members. The past president of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies Jeremy Spinak e”h, who tragically passed away at the age of 36 in November 2018, was honoured posthumously at the NSW Premier’s Harmony Dinner, for his tireless efforts in building bridges with diverse communities and for spearheading the keep NSW Safe campaign.
