Australian Jews barely caught their breath following the Australian elections, when they heard about the Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s failure to negotiate a majority coalition government and his decision to dissolve the Israeli Knesset Parliament and intent to call new Israeli elections on the 17th September, 2019. A prominent Sydney Doctor Jamal Rifi, a Muslim of Lebanese background, has been intimidated and threatened online over his involvement with the humanitarian charity Project Rozana, which raises funds for Palestinian and Israeli children to be able to be treated in Israeli hospitals and for Palestinian doctors to train in such hospitals. The highly successful Israeli, Haredi family saga “Shtisel”, which contains some 20% Yiddish dialogue, has hit the big time via Netflix and with English subtitles, shows the way for a revival of Yiddish drama and theatrical productions in Israel, Australia and around the world.
