Alex Dafner

Australians and Israelis were shocked and saddened by the murder of Israeli student Aia Masarwe in Bundoora, the northern suburb of Melbourne where she lived and studied, and tributes and vigils were held in her honour in the spot where she was killed, as police appealed for information and posted photos of her clothing and a T-shirt and hat found hear her body. The small, conservative Australian Jewish Association (AJA) group that called for Australia to boycott their match against Palestine in the Asian Football Cup, was criticised by Jewish and non-Jewish groups and individuals for their unrepresentative and provocative call. An Australia-Israel bio-medical research cooperation project has resulted in a stem-cell and innovative delivery process, which may lead to the elimination, within the next decade, of insulin injections for type-1 diabetes.
