Alex Dafner with the Yiddish report The German Chancellor Angela Merkel sent an official posthumous apology on behalf of the German Government to William Cooper, the Aboriginal leader and human rights activist who organised and led an Aboriginal League delegation to the German Consulate in Melbourne, to protest against the treatment of Jews in Germany following the Kristalnight pogrom of the 9th to 10th November 1938. The ECAJ heard an annual report by their chief researcher Julie Nathan in which she outlined the sobering statistics of serious antisemitic incidents in Australia, which continued to raise despite an overall fall in incidents and which occurred in a year when synagogues and Jewish institutions were largely closed because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The Australian academic from Melbourne University, Kylie Moore-Gilbert, who was freed from a prison in Iran last week, where she had been held on charges of spying since 2018, was alleged, in a propaganda film from Iran, to have converted to Judaism before marrying an Israeli citizen there.
