Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has scored a comfortable lead in Delhi crossing the magic figure of 36 seats in a 70-seat assembly. BJP, although not able cross the majority-mark, has made small gains with a lead on more than 10 seats. The party had three seats in the concurrent assembly.

Congress, could not get a single seat, yet again, and remains out of the assembly for the second consecutive term.

Delhi-based senior journalist Poonam Pandey says the results are not unexpected.

“All the exit polls had predicted a victory for Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP in an election campaign clouded by anti Muslim rhetoric, and BJP leaders tried to make nationalism the main issue. However, Kejriwal stuck to development and kept repeating that voters of Delhi should vote on the issue of roads, schools and electricity,” said Ms Pandey.

According to Delhi’s deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, their victory is the victory of "true" patriotism.

“Our victory will prove that real patriotism is that, if you get the opportunity in politics, you must work for the people. Work on education, hospitals,” Mr Sisodia said while speaking to news channel NDTV.
