Renowned actor Anupam Kher has come in support of Akshay Kumar over his citizenship row.
'Dear Akshay Kumar! Have been reading about you explaining to certain people about your loyalty to our country. Stop it! Their real profession is to make people like you & me feel defensive for talking in favour of India. You are a doer. You don't need to explain to anybody,' Mr Kher tweeted.
Akshay Kumar, known for his recent films on patriotic themes, had clarified on Twitter that he held a Canadian passport.
He said, 'I really don't understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport.'
However, earlier Mr Kumar had said he was bestowed with honorary citizenship by the Canadian government. In an Interview with Indian news channel Times Now he had said, 'I am an honorary citizen of Canada. I think people should be proud of.'
However, the public list of individuals who were given honorary citizenship by the Canadian Government does not include Mr Kumar's name.
On voting day in Mumbai, where Mr Kumar resides, his wife turned out to vote, but Mr Kumar did not vote.
When a reporter questioned him for not voting, he refused to respond.
After the video of him brushing the question aside went viral on social media, people started questioning him.
Commentator Sumanth Raman said, 'Not only is he a Canadian citizen but he wants to settle down in Canada after he retires. India is not good enough for him I guess, or it is only to help him make money and give him name and fame. #akshaykumar Shame.'
Later Akshay Kumar released a statement saying it is a personal matter.
'While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others,' Mr Kumar said.
Mr Kumar was recently in the news for interviewing Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
