An invention, waiting for the light of day

This story is not about any man or any celebrity but it’s a story about an invention that has the potential to transform a part of medical science, not only in India but all over the world.

Shailendra Birlani’s invention, however, is still waiting to see the light of day.

SBS Hindi has several claims that verify proof of his claim

Shailendra Birlani claims he has invented a ‘smart’ syringe that self destructs after a single use.

"The normal syringe that is currently used can be applied multiple times. This Syringe is auto-disposable. Once used, it destroys itself,” says Bhopal-based Shailendra..

Shailendra says his syringe may be able to save people from many diseases caused by blood infection.

“By mistake a syringe can be used multiple times and it increases the chances of infecting people but this new developed syringe will make sure that it is used only once reducing number of people getting infected from the used syringe.”
The World Health Organisation says that use of the same syringe or needle to give injections to more than one person is driving the spread of a number of deadly infectious diseases worldwide.

It reported that in 2010, up to 1.7 million people were infected with hepatitis B virus, up to 315,000 with hepatitis C virus and as many as 33,800 with HIV through an unsafe injection.

In 2006, at the age of 24, Shailendra obtained the patent for his syringe.

He says he believed that getting a patent without any assistance at such a young age was a major achievement and tried register it in the Limca Book of Records – the Indian equivalent to the Guiness Book of World Records, which provides an opportunity for ordinary Indians to “showcase their talent in their search for excellence.”

But unfortunately that couldn’t happen.

"Officers of Limca Book of Records approached the Indian government to know my age at the time when I obtained the patent,” Shailendra Biryani explained to SBS Hindi.

“But unfortunately, there was no column for the date of birth in the online record of the Controller General of Patent to reveal the age of people receiving the patent."

This was disappointing for Shailendra,  but he says entering the Limca Book of Records was not his main ambition.

Instead, he said he wanted the entire world benefit from his invention.

He told SBS he requested special dispensation from the Indian President in order to make his syringe available to all as well as educating people about its use and benefits.

Instead of selling his invention to private companies for profit, Shailendra has still been waiting for the president's decision for the past seven years just to make sure that his invention can serve society.

While SBS Hindi does not have the official side of the case, it has seen documentation to verify Shailendra’s claim.

Before publishing the story, we scrutinized the claims to the best of our ability with documentation provided by Shailendra Birlani, including the patent.
