Though emotional abuse doesn’t leave physical scars, it can have huge impact on victim’s confidence and self-esteem.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics says 3.3 million Australians have experienced emotional abuse by a partner since the age of 15.
In migrant communities there are additional barriers which can impact on how the abuse is experienced.
So, what exactly is emotional abuse? Here are the 5 warning signs:
1. Verbally insulting, attacking a person’s intelligence or body image
2. Isolating the person from their family or friends
3. Controlling or limiting the person’s freedom
4. Depriving the person of money, food or transport
5. Withholding approval, appreciation or affection as punishment
