Sangeet Som, A ruling BJP legislator from Sardhana in Meerut, told Indian Express that Australia denied him the visa due to his alleged involvement in communal riots.
According to a report published in the English daily, Sangeet Som claimed in a public meeting on Tuesday, “I love Muzaffarnagar very much. This is why I have become a known figure in the world to the extent that no country is willing to give me a visa.”
“I applied for a visa to visit Australia but was denied on the plea that cases are pending against me. I had applied for the visa… in 2015 but could not get through. After that I dropped the idea of going out of our country,” Som told The Indian Express.
Sangeet Som was arrested in September 2013 for making an alleged inflammatory speech in Muzaffarnagar. The National Security Act was invoked against him. Later he was acquitted of all charges.
In2013, clashes between Hindus and Muslims in Muzaffarnagar claimed 62 lives. Thousands were displaced.
Sangeet Som has been in controversies with his statements. He called Taj Mahal a blot on Indian culture and history.
In his affidavit to the Election Commission, Som had disclosed that five cases were pending against him. However, he has not been convicted in any case.
