Ms Swaraj was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences around 9 pm. She underwent a kidney transplant three years ago but had reportedly not been keeping well lately.

“A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people,” Mr Modi said on Twitter.

Hours before her death, Ms Swaraj had congratulated Prime Minister for scrapping article 370 to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

“I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime,” she had said on Twitter.
Nine-time-MP, Ms Swaraj was very known for her quick responses to the distress calls on social media platforms including Twitter.
As a foreign minister, she helped many for visas, passports and other personal issues.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described her as an extraordinary political leader, a gifted orator & an exceptional Parliamentarian, with friendships across party lines.

“I’m shocked to hear about the demise of Sushma Swaraj Ji, an extraordinary political leader, a gifted orator & an exceptional Parliamentarian, with friendships across party lines,” Mr Gandhi tweeted.
Sushma Swaraj, born on 14th February 1952, and began her career as an advocate in the Supreme Court of India.
She went on to become the second woman to hold the External Affairs portfolio after Indira Gandhi. She was also the youngest cabinet minister in the government in the state of Haryana, the first female chief minister of Delhi and the first female spokesperson for a national political party in the country.
Her funeral will be held later in the evening on Wednesday.
