Australian government has asked an advisory group of business and unions to look at reducing the list of occupations covered by foreign worker visas.

The review of the consolidated sponsored occupational list (CSOL) follows a meeting of an advisory council on skilled migration with Immigration Minister Peter Dutton on Friday.

The existing list covers more than 650 occupations and applies to temporary and permanent employer sponsored visas, including the 457 visa program.
The advisory group includes Australian Industry Group CEO Innes Willox and ACTU president Ged Kearney.

Mr Dutton said the review will examine opportunities to condense the list.

"It is important that the integrity of the list be maintained to ensure that skilled migration meets the genuine needs of Australia's economy and does not displace Australian workers," he said.

The group will provide its findings and advice to Mr Dutton in the first half of 2017.
