The bus in which 29-year-old Indian migrant Manmeet Alisher was burnt to death has been destroyed by Brisbane council, Brisbane Times reported.
Manmeet Alisher worked as a bus driver and in October 2016, was allegedly set alight by 48-year-old Anthony O’Donohue when he pulled the bus over to the Moorooka bus stop in Brisbane.
Manmeet’s colleagues at the Rail Tram and Bus Union drove with black bands on their arms in memory of Manmeet in days following his death.
The Union’s assistant state secretary Tom Brown previously said it was fitting the bus be destroyed than be returned to service and probably retire the bus number, 1980, too.
The Brisbane City Council obliged and have destroyed the bus and taken the number off its fleet.
"Council has also retired the bus fleet number out of respect for Mr Sharma's family and his Brisbane Transport peers," the council spokesman was quoted saying.
There were some remarks from the Labor opposition leader Peter Cumming though who said that he had no problems with the bus being destroyed but "if it was still worth a lot of money, you’d wonder whether it was appropriate or not."
But he also agreed that other drivers were unlikely to be willing to drive that bus or bus number 1980.
