AFP has reported that the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that Badesha and Sindhu, who are Canadian citizens now, can be extradited to India.
Both are wanted in connection with the murder of 25 years old Jasvinder Kaur Sindhu who was the daughter of Malkit Kaur Sindhu. Badesha is Jasvinder’s uncle.
The case goes back to 2000 when Jasvinder Kaur’s body was found in Punjab. Her throat was slit. She was a victim of honour killing planned by Badesha and Sindhu, according to Indian prosecutors. According to the police, Jasvinder married secretly to a rikshaw driver in Canada. When she revealed her marriage to the family, she received opposition and flew to India to be with her husband Mithu Sidhu. Both were killed in Punjab in June 2000.
Prosecutors allege that her mother and uncle hired thugs to kill the couple. Seven men were convicted for the crime, several of whom were got their convictions overturned on appeal.
The family however denied any involvement in the killing.
Authorities have been seeking the extradition of Canadian citizens Badesha and Sindhu for several years which was granted by country’s justice minister in 2014. Both appealed against the decision and it was reversed by the court in 2016.
Reversing the decision Supreme Court has authorised the extradition.
