38-years-old Jagmeet Singh won around 54 percent votes to replace Thomas Mulcair as the leader of the party.
“Canadians must stand united to champion the politics of courage over the politics of fear, the politics of love to fight the growing politics of division,” Singh said in his speech after the results were announced.
Singh is a criminal lawyer by profession. He was born into a Sikh-Indian family in Scraborough, Ontario. He was in news recently when one of his meetings were invaded by a woman raising racist slogans.
NDP is looking forward to fight for coming general elections under Singh's leadership.
Canada's Prime Minister Justine Trudeau congratulated Singh on twitter. He wrote, "I look forward to speaking soon and working together for Canadians."
