Car thefts are becoming common in Melbourne, especially in the Western suburbs.
Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch has warned all drivers to beware after an increase in incidents.
These thieves, operating in gangs, in an attempt to steal cars have taken to using a terrifying technique - “bumping.”
"Bumping" occurs when a driver deliberately steers his/her car into another vehicle with the intention of stealing it.
As soon as the victim gets out of his/her car to look at the damage and argue the thieves steal the car.
Greater Dandenong Acting Inspector Mick Daly told the Leader - “Personal safety should always be a high priority and this is no different when driving a car.”
“The best advice is to always be aware of your surroundings and what is occurring nearby,” Daly added,
He also advised that motorists should lock their doors while driving - “If you are involved in an accident check your surroundings before getting out of the car.”
Daly says - “If you do not feel safe write down the rego number of the car involved and contact police for attendance. Take note of the other driver’s appearance, such as height and hair colour in case a description is needed at a later date.”
