Customers urged to check their Samsung washing machine after it catches fire in Sydney

Washing Machine Recall

If you own a Samsung top loader washing machine, NSW Authorities would like you to check if your machine is subject to a mandatory recall.

This comes after it was reported that another machine caught fire at a unit block in Auburn in Sydney's west on Saturday.

ABC News reported that three women were admitted to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Last year, the Fair Trading Commission ordered recall of six models of Samsung top loading machines. It is learnt that over 144,000 of them have been sold in Australia.

Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe told ABC that they urge people to check the model numbers on their machines.

"We know this is a real and present danger," he told the ABC.

"Regrettably, we have had these fire incidents.

"It's really important that people respond to the recall and make sure the machine they are using is safe.

"I'm pleased to say that the recall to date has seen something like 75 per cent of affected machines either subject to a technical fix or a replacement."

But he said there were likely still thousands of such machines in use.

If you own a Samsung washing machine, you are advised to check the model number and either go to the Fair Trading website or contact Samsung directly for a replacement or a refund.
