A 54-year-old lawyer and owner of Gelobar, Joe Acquaro’s dead body was found on a footpath in Melbourne’s Brunswick East.

A garbage truck driver found the body of Joe Acquaro about 100m from Gelobar, at 3am.

Detectives present on the spot told the media that Mr Acquaro had closed the café on Lygon St around 12.40 am and was walking to his car when he was attacked.

Mr Acquaro has been a lawyer of quite a few underworld figures like Rocco Arico and Francesco Madafferi.

While Madafferi is in jail for drug trafficking, Mr Acquaro appeared for Arico in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last week.

Witnesses have told the police that they heard gun shots and the sound of a car travelling along the street on wrong side.

Detective Inspector Mick Hughes said, “We have an early report that a witness has heard a car travelling down that street (St Phillip Street) away from Lygon St at reasonably high speed. So if anyone has seen cars in the area prior to the shooting, or just after the shooting please contact Crime Stoppers.”

If you have any information about the shooting contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
