“One out of six couples in Australia require In Vitro Fertility (IVF) treatment”- Dr Chandrika Parmar

A fertility specialist of Indian-origin, Dr Chandrika Parmar, who has been rated number one among the top 10 fertility specialists in Melbourne in 2017 by XXXX says one of out every six couples in Australia require IVF treatment these days.

“One in six couples require fertility treatment in some form or the other. If you visit a classroom of 20 to 22 children, you will find that at least one or two kids are IVF babies. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive a pregnancy after 12 months of unprotected intercourse. It affects about 1 in 6 Australian couples of reproductive age,” explains Dr Parmar.

She says the causes for infertility are manyfold.

“There can be biological problems or at times women cannot conceive due to advanced age and to top it all stress in modern life is also a contributory factor,” says Dr Parmar.

However she says IVF helps as modern techniques and the procedure is quite safe.

Is IVF painful?

Dr Parmar says the treatment is not painful and can take up to six to eight months. For some couples it might take longer.

On being asked if it was true that In Vitro Fertilisation can lead to the birth of twins or triplets or even more babies, Dr Parmar advises that, “Australia is famous for single embryo transfer with fewer chances of multiple pregnancy.”

She also said in Australia, Medicare gives you about 50 to 60% of the cost and one can go for more than one cycle as there is no capping.
