The couple was residing in New Zealand with their son. They were visiting India for a wedding scheduled for March 24.

Indian news agency PTI reported that the accident took place on Monday. The couple was crossing the railway crossing near the Ambala City railway station when they were hit by the train.

Railway police officials told local media that the couple failed to notice the approaching train and died on the spot. People shouted to warn them about the train but failed.

The bodies were mangled and could not be identified. Their identity could be confirmed with the help of a passbook Mr Lal was carrying with him.

His son in New Zealand has been informed.

Mr Lal and his wife had flown to India a fortnight back to attend the marriage of their grandson who lives in Indore.
