Hemant Govekar’s friends and family members have organised a memorial event. A message posted on Hemant’s Facebook page appeals his friends to join.

“We are organising a memorial event in Brisbane on Sunday 7th Jan. Location to be confirmed shortly. Hemant's family including parents, sister and other close relatives will be at the event,” it reads.

Hemant Govekar, who hailed from Mumbai, recently graduated from the University of Queensland. He had gone to Phillip Island with his family and went for a swim at the Cape Woolamai beach when he was spotted by surfers in trouble about 5.30pm on Christmas Day.

He quickly disappeared from their sight, according to the family.

Human remains were found during the search last week. The police says the remains will undergo forensic testing to determine identity.

The post on Hemant’s page says, “Hemant had a big network of friends and colleagues in Brisbane. It would to good see you at the event and remember the extraordinary person that Hemant was. Appreciate all your prayers and support.”
