Federal election: Meet the candidates of Indian origin

Australians will vote to choose a new government next month. A total of 1541 candidates have nominated to contest the federal elections. How many are of Indian origin?

The national figures include 458 candidates contesting 40 Senate vacancies and 1,056 candidates for the 151 House of Representatives divisions across Australia, according to the Australian Electoral Commission.

Many persons of Indian origin are trying their luck in the federal elections. Here are some of them:

Hemant Dave

Hemant Dave is a Liberal candidate from Makin seat in South Australia. A taxi operator by profession, Mr Dave has been living in SA for almost 12 years. He studied electrical engineering in India.

Shireen Morris

A Labor candidate for Deakin seat in Victoria, Ms Morris is Fijian-Indian. She was born in Australia. After working as an actress and singer, Ms Morris later studied law.

Rajan Vaid

Rajan Vaid is a candidate for Hindmarsh seat in South Australia from Fraser Anning’s Conservative National Party. The Labor Party currently holds the seat.

Ganesh Loke

A Parramatta-resident Ganesh (Gary) Loke is an entrepreneur. Ganesh, who arrived in Australia around 20 years ago, runs a film production company and an IT/training company. He contested a Federal election in Sydney’s Parramatta seat in 2013 on United Australia Party ticket.

Navdeep Singh

A mechanical and environmental engineer, Navdeep Singh is a Greens party candidate for Senate from Queensland. He moved to Australia in 2007 and now runs his own business.

Harkirat Singh

Harkirat Singh is Greens candidate for Gorton seat in Victoria. Labor leader Brendan O'Connor holds the seat since its creation in 2004.

Sunny Chandra

An IT professional, Sunny Chandra has nominated himself as an Independent candidate for a senate from Victoria. He moved to Australia in 1975. An IIT Kanpur graduate, Mr Chandra worked as an IT professional and later founded his own tech firm.

Prakul Chhabra

United Australia Party candidate for Calwell seat of Victoria, Prakul Chhabra was born in India. He migrated to Australia with his parents. He studied commerce at Deakin University before joining one of Australia’s biggest banks as an advisor.

Sahil Chawla

Sahil Chawla is fighting for Western Australia’s Burt seat on the United Australia Party ticket. Perth-based real estate dealer, Mr Chawla hails from New Delhi in India. He arrived in Australia some 16 years ago.

Chandra Singh

Fiji-Indian Chandra Singh is United Australia Party candidate for NSW’s Eden-Monaro seat. He migrated to Australia in 1991 from Fiji. He has worked in the insurance industry, as a salesman, on the railways, as bowser attendant and in property development.

Raj Samson

Born in India, Raj Samson is fighting for Solomon seat of Northern Territory. A doctor by profession, Mr Samson has worked in the health industry.

Jatinder Singh

A UAP candidate for Holt seat in Victoria, Jatinder (Bobby) Singh runs an automotive business for the past ten years. He was a UAP candidate in 2013 elections too.

Aruna Chandrala

An upper house Labor candidate from New South Wales, Aruna Chandrala migrated from India more than 30 years ago.

Nikhil Aai Reddy

Nikhil Reddy is One Nation candidate for Petrie seat in Queensland. Mr Reddy was born in India and arrived in Australia in 2007 as a student. He is working for the Queensland Government Department of Housing and Public Works.
