First Metro train arrives in Sydney from India

The first train has arrived from India to run on tracks in Sydney. This train is for the Northwest Metro line. It will be tested over the coming months. Services will start in 2019.

The metro train is assembled in Sri City near Chennai. It is the first driverless metro train. Six carriages will be shipped to Sydney. The final fitout will take place at a maintenance depot at Rouse Hill.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, that people living in Sydney’s northwest would get a train every four minutes during peak periods  in each direction, once the line opens up  in 2019.

The metro coaches are built by the Alstom at its Sri City manufacturing facility, near Tada on Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border. A total of 22 trains consisting six coaches each are to be shipped to Sydney. The company is responsible for the project management, design, supply, manufacturing, testing and commissioning of the rolling stock and signalling systems in Sydney.

This is a new-generation metro trains and as 'Sydney Metro' claims, "It will make customer journeys easy."

According to the statement available on Sydney Metro's website, "Fast, safe and reliable, the trains will operate exclusively on the Sydney Metro network and are required to run at 98 per cent on-time reliability."

It adds that the new train will have facilities like level access with platforms to multi-purpose areas for prams, luggage and bicycles and real time travel information.

This kind of trains are used in 25 cities accross the world including metros in Singapore, Barcelona and Amsterdam. Alstom, the manufacturer has customised it for Sydney.
