Foreign Affairs minister Julie Bishop is visiting India where the two countries will look to further deepen engagement on defence, security, education and trade ties.
On Tuesday, she will meet her counterpart Sushma Swaraj, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar, Defence and Finance minister Arun Jaitley and will call on India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"We will discuss our shared interests in a stable IndoPacific, our deepening defence and security relationship, and how we can boost trade and economic ties," Bishop said while announcing her visit.
“India is a significant economic partner and trading partner, and I will explore further opportunities for Australia in the education sector and in developing innovative partnerships in the business sector,” minister said in a media release.
She will visit the Shiv Nadar School to meet with students and teachers to discuss the careers of the future and highlight Australia as an education destination of choice for students.
She will also deliver Indo-Pacific Oration in New Delhi, outlining how Australia and India can work together to build peace and prosperity, and to maintain a rules-based order in the region.
Australian High Commission in India, Harinder Sidhu tweeted on her arrival welcoming her to India.
Ms Sidhu said the visit places emphasis on India as one of Australia’s top economic and security partners.
“We are committed to exploring ways to expand our engagement even further,” Ms Sidhu said.
“Our countries have a dynamic and growing knowledge partnership, flourishing people-to-people links and converging political, economic and strategic interests. And there is scope for us to do much more together.”
