“We have to hide our identity of an NRI in front of officials as they double their ‘sewa’ rates immediately after knowing our status. Despite charging us repeatedly and enormously, they put our jobs on hold for many years,” NRI GS Gill from Canada told Deputy Commissioner of Jalandhar, Varinder Sharma, at the first NRI meet organised by the state government.
Non-resident Indians from different parts arrived in Jalandhar to attend first NRI meet organised by Amarinder Singh government.
Some alleged that the government officials double the rates of the bribe when NRIs approach them, The Tribune reported.
It was a special camp to redress the grievances of Indians living abroad. Although, the initiative received a lukewarm response according to the media reports as few NRIs turned up.
Many NRIs urged officials to abolish the “Sewa-Paani” culture in government departments. Others like Avtaar Singh (93) appealed to solve their issues. Singh, who hails from Canada, claimed that his brother had encroached over his land in the village.
The officials asked NRIs to refrain from offering bribes to government officials.
