India beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the first One-Day International at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Sunday (August 20).
India scored 220/1 to Sri Lanka’s 216 all out with Shikhar Dhawan leading the way with the bat with a brutal unbeaten 132 from 90 balls and Virat Kohli marking his return to the venue of his international debut with a ruthless 82 not out from 70 balls.
Left arm spinner Axar Patel’s career-best figures of three for 34 runs broke Sri Lanka’s batting line-up.
India was to chase 217 and that did not start well when Rohit Sharma was run out in the fifth over for merely four runs when he lost his bat and did not ground his feet behind the crease.
But Dhawan batted like a pro and put the Lankans on a backfoot. With Kohli at the other end of crease, the duo ensured a comfortable win for India with 21.1 overs to spare
