The International Cricket Council (ICC) has apologised after a political tweet was retweeted from its official account.

On April 25th, as the news came through that self-styled Indian spiritual guru Asaram Bapu had been sentenced to life in prison for raping a teenaged female devotee, Alt News co-founder Pratik Sinha posted an old video of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Asaram Bapu.

The tweet was re-tweeted by ICC’s official Twitter handle - @ICC with a comment, ‘Narayan, Narayan…’

Many users on Twitter objected to the tweet.
The tweet was later deleted and ICC issued an apology.

"ICC is dismayed at a non-cricket related tweet appearing on its Twitter feed earlier today.

"We would like to extend our sincere apologies to anyone who was offended during the short space of time it was up.

"We have launched an investigation into how this happened."
